E PLURIBUS UNUM
- "out of many, one"I was looking at the dime with that new "Liberty Over Tyranny" line but I had forgotten E Pluribus Unum.
I seem to recall the idea of the motto was to indicate that we are made of many but we hold true to the one - the United States of America.
The 13 colonies were individual states, each having a separate identity, in many cases holding different religious beliefs, different economies... and yet, they agreed to come together as one for the idea of being their own nation with freedom to worship as one chooses, to assemble freely and to have freedom of speech and the press, etc.
The United States became a beacon where people flocked to yearning to be free of the old class systems, of monarchies and oligarchies and real tyrants. Some were shunned and ridiculed but they assimilated and eventually became "True Blue" Americans.
We seem to have forgotten that even though America is a great nation, we are great because we are different, because we are inclusive. And because we are almost equal.
The war on Diversity, Equity [Equality] and Inclusion should be seen as totally UN-American. Yet so many have loudly proclaimed that Diversity, Equity and Inclusion are bad things.
I don't understand that. I mean I do - it's a code for something ugly, mean and horrific. We pay lip service to tte idea that all people are equal, yet we also see the dystopia of Orwell's "Animal Farm" playing out in front of us every day:
"All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others."
